This is an open letter from the Property Taxpayers Alliance (www.propertytaxpayer.ca) to Karen Redman and council asking them to reflect on the devastation caused by decades of above inflation property taxation in the region.
With your six figure incomes, above inflation property tax increases are barely noticeable. You’ve become desensitized.
But lower income homeowners, landlords, renters, and business owners alike are not so lucky, and they are being crushed and squeezed out.
The region is taking more than it is giving back to an increasing number of residents, possibly the majority of residents.
Above inflation property taxation year-after-year is a direct attack on the most vulnerable among us, where affordability has reached crisis levels.
Year-after-year, those on fixed incomes are being forced to sell their homes, proprietors to sell their businesses, and renters to move out of their apartments into homelessness.
Have you measured how much homelessness extended above inflation property taxation has created in the region? You should!
Year-after-year above inflation property tax increases are simply not sustainable. Its basic mathematics.
Karen Redman and council, you must start living within “our” means, not “your” means.
Its time to get back down to inflation or less property tax increases – because typical Waterloo Region resident incomes are rising at the rate of inflation or less and that’s all we can afford.
Enough is Enough.
